GirlsCodeToo
Ways to interact with this organization
The Most Important in Brief
GirlsCodeToo is a Zurich-based nonprofit founded in 2021 to close the gender gap in technology. We offer girls aged 8 to 18 practical, creative workshops in coding, robotics, artificial intelligence and 3D printing. Our formats include after-school coding clubs, holiday camps, school workshops and mother-daughter courses, and we run them across Switzerland in German, French, Italian and English. In a safe setting with female role models, participants build real projects, gain confidence and see that technology is a field where they belong. Alongside our youth programs, we partner with companies and schools to strengthen the pipeline of women in tech.
Purpose
GirlsCodeToo's purpose is to promote the participation of girls and young women in technology and computer science. To this end, the association offers hands-on, extracurricular learning opportunities in coding, robotics, artificial intelligence and 3D printing, and works with schools, companies and public institutions to promote gender inclusion in STEM throughout Switzerland.
Goals
Give girls aged 8 to 18 early, positive and practical experiences with technology, so they discover their interest and abilities in the field.
Strengthen girls' confidence in their own digital skills and broaden their view of future education and career paths in tech.
Reach girls in all language regions of Switzerland, offering programs in German, French, Italian and English.
Make visible female role models from tech and give girls the chance to meet them in person.
Build lasting partnerships with schools, companies and institutions to anchor girl-specific STEM promotion in the Swiss education landscape.
Principles
GirlsCodeToo combines learning by doing with creativity: in every workshop, girls build a project of their own that they can take home or keep developing. Our formats are designed for girls, offering a welcoming setting where they can try things out, ask questions and make mistakes without pressure. We work with formats that engage girls' social environment, such as Tandem workshops in which girls attend with a trusted person. Our curricula are continuously updated to reflect new technologies such as generative AI, and we evaluate our offerings systematically, with over 90% positive participant feedback. We act independently and inclusively, and we cooperate with partners from business, academia and public institutions.
Measures
Hands-on workshops in coding, robotics, artificial intelligence and 3D printing, held in German, French, Italian and English.
After-school coding clubs (Programmierclub) that let girls deepen their skills over a longer period.
Holiday camps that combine technology with creative disciplines, for example designing and 3D printing lamps.
Tandem workshops in which girls attend together with a trusted person, such as a mother, aunt or older sister.
Workshops in schools and cooperation with teachers to reach girls directly in their everyday learning environment.
Company and recruitment workshops with partner companies and apprenticeship employers, giving girls insight into tech careers and apprenticeships.
Female role models from industry and academia who share their experience with participants.
Continuous development of our curricula, including new formats on generative AI, AI ethics and cybersecurity.
Systematic evaluation of our programs, including collaboration with universities of applied sciences and teacher training institutions.
Presence at public events such as the Scientifica science festival in Zurich to raise awareness and reach new families.
Financing
GirlsCodeToo is financed through a mix of sources: contributions from foundations and public funding bodies, including project funding from the Federal Office for Gender Equality; partnerships and sponsorships with companies; revenue from workshops commissioned by companies and organizations; and participant fees for open workshops and camps, kept affordable to ensure broad access. We are actively expanding our funding base through applications to foundations and cantons.
