The Most Important in Brief

The purpose of the Foundation is to promote clinical surgical research, in particular so-called outcome research in the surgical and related subjects as well as in accompanying related sciences for the improvement and quality control of surgical treatment of patients. The aim is to ensure optimal treatment through the continuous collection and analysis of clinical and patient-related outcome data. The research activities are carried out by SORC (Surgical Outcome Research Center, University Hospital Basel [USB], Switzerland) primarily in the Canton of Basel-Stadt in collaboration with surgical clinics at USB, but can also be extended to the whole of Switzerland or abroad. In pursuit of this purpose, the Foundation can in particular promote projects for the collection of clinical data, comparative studies, cost-benefit comparisons, the creation of databases and the development of prognostic models. The scientific discourse on treatment outcomes and training in patient-oriented outcome research shall be promoted. These projects can be inter-institutional, inter-professional and interdisciplinary.

Purpose (SOGC)

Goals

We aim to provide personalized surgical patient care by supporting clinical outcome research that collects and analyzes real-world treatment data. Based on this, we develop prognostic models and enable other innovations that ensure optimal treatment quality—locally in Basel and internationally. We invite partners and donors to join us in shaping the future of surgery.

Principles

Our Foundation is committed to advancing surgical care through evidence-based research and collaboration. We value scientific integrity, transparency, and patient-centered outcomes as the cornerstones of our work. By systematically collecting and analyzing clinical and patient-related data, we strive to improve treatment quality and safety. Our approach is interdisciplinary and inclusive, fostering partnerships across institutions and professions to ensure that innovations in surgical outcome research translate into real-world benefits for patients. We believe in continuous learning, open scientific discourse, and the responsible use of resources to create lasting impact in healthcare—locally and globally.

Measures

We support the Surgical Outcome Research Center (SORC) at the University Hospital in Basel. SORC offers: - Support for researchers from surgical clinics by experts (study design, database development, regulatories, central monitoring, statistics, quality management, medical writing, etc.) - Documentation center and quality control for surgical treatment - Facilitation of surgeons' workflows (less time for administration means more time with the patient) - Research activities on these topics: interoperability between databases, AI supported data collection, methods for prediction of outcomes and application into clinical routine, documentation of intra- and postoperative adverse events, cost-effectiveness assessments and more.

Financing

Funding consists of donations from private individuals and contributions from clinical partners and foundations.
