Restoration of the Burnt Serewa Forest Reserve in Handeni District,Tanzania

  1. Goal
    Serewa Forest Reserve is a crucial forest for the whole community of Handeni District, Serewa Forest is a forest that has 90Ha in area and has different trees species which attract rain and sometimes used as medical herbs but also it has a source of water used by community. The main challenges faced this forest now are drought due to the little rainfall and also fire outbreak led by local farmers who cultivate neat the forest, Illegal logging,forest encroachment and so on. We need to restore the nature of this forest through tree planting and provisions education about Enviromental conservation. We have already planted more than 20.000 indigenous trees with forest management team and other people who cultivate near the forest,the main goal to plant with the community members is to give the forest ownership to the community and this will give a lesson to protect their forest forever. We initiate the community tree nursery to raise indigenous trees ourselves and reduce the cost.

    Due to the problem of drought:- -We need to plant 50.000 indigenous trees with different species like Afzelia quanzensis,Makamia Lutea,Brachylaena huillensis. etc
  4. Measures
    -The main challenge faced this forest are drought and fire outbreak, through this challenges we plan to plant trees and provisions education about Enviromental conservation to stop illegal logging and Forest encroachment. -Through tree planting well accompanied with forest management team and those families live near the forest in order to make them as a Steward for this forest.

    We have been collaborated with International Tree Foundation since last year but we need more support to accomplish this task

The restoration efforts would help maintain a balanced ecosystem and ensure sustainable water resources for nearby communities. Additionally, Serewa Forest Reserve is a source of livelihood for local communities who depend on it.

    The restoration of the burnt Serewa Forest Reserve is a uniquely impactful initiative that blends ecological renewal with community resilience. This project stands out due to its focus on restoring a fire-damaged ecosystem through the use of fire-resilient native species, soil regeneration techniques, and the integration of climate-smart practices such as agroforestry and early warning fire systems. Beyond environmental recovery, the project empowers local communities by providing employment, training, and sustainable livelihoods, including beekeeping and eco-tourism. Our organization is exceptionally well-suited to implement this project due to our proven expertise in post-fire restoration, a multidisciplinary team of ecologists and community development specialist.
