The Most Important in Brief

Talent is distributed normally. Opportunity is not. Christel House breaks the cycle of poverty by providing our all children with life changing, whole-child education. We support our children from age 4, through early childhood education, primary, secondary and tertiary education until self-sufficiency at 23. Our wrap-around support enables education by providing all children with daily transport, uniforms, nutrition, health services, counselling and parental support. Our classrooms brim with energy with a character-based, career focussed and trauma-informed approach. This allows our children to become critical thinkers and problem solvers who approach their life with agency. For us success is when our graduates have upward economic mobility, are good citizens who are empowered to realise their goals and dreams. Today 95% of our alumni are working or studying. That is human gold.

  3. Goals

The goals of Christel House South Africa is helping children from extremely resource poor environments move from poverty to sustainable employment and productive citizenship through a long-term, holistic education model. It is to move children from disadvantaged backgrounds “from classrooms to life” — equipping them with education, character, and career pathways so they can achieve lasting economic mobility. Core goals 1. Break the cycle of poverty The primary goal is to break intergenerational poverty by providing high-quality education and life support to children who would otherwise have very limited opportunities. 2. Achieve upward economic mobility for graduates A key outcome is that graduates enter higher education or employment and become economically independent, helping them change the trajectory of their families and communities. 3. Deliver holistic “whole-child” development Christel House aims to develop academic, social, emotional, and physical wellbeing, recognising that children cannot succeed academically without broader support. This includes: • Quality academics (including STEAM subjects) • Nutrition and healthcare • Counselling and trauma-informed care • Character and leadership development 4. Support students from early childhood to careers Longitudinal support—students are supported for up to 19 years (Grade RR through Grade 12 plus about five years after matric) with mentoring, tertiary guidance, and career placement assistance. 5. Develop responsible citizens and leaders The programme emphasises values such as respect, responsibility, independence, and integrity, preparing graduates to contribute positively to society. 6. Strengthen families and communities Christel House works with parents and caregivers to build stable family environments and stronger communities, multiplying the impact beyond individual students.
  4. Principles

Our education model is character-based and career focussed. Whilst education is an essential tool in upward mobility, is also serves to level the playing field and this is where we believe that a character building approach to delivering the curriculum entrenches
  5. Measures

Breaking the Cycle of Poverty through Character-Based and Career-Focused Education Our Vision: A world where poverty does not limit potential. Our Mission: Christel House prepares students to achieve upward economic mobility, demonstrate good citizenship, and become empowered to identify and realise their goals, dreams, and human potential. Who we are: Christel House South Africa (CHSA) offers no-fee scholarships to students from some of the poorest neighbourhoods in Cape Town. We support students for 19 years with holistic, character-based, career-focused education. We operate nine schools worldwide, of which Christel House South Africa, established in 2001, is the only one in Africa. Our school currently serves 29 severely under-served communities in Cape Town. The communities we serve all face high unemployment rates and high levels of gangsterism and crime. Further, increasing levels of poverty and unemployment lead to high rates of gender-based violence, excessive alcohol consumption and substance abuse. Our admissions policy prioritises learners from families facing extreme economic hardship and living on about CHF100 per month. Admissions decisions are based on a holistic assessment of need, which includes income context alongside social, household, and educational factors. Final admissions decisions are always made holistically and in line with our mission to serve families with genuine economic need. Many students arrive at Christel House malnourished, and the majority have experienced trauma in their home life. Currently, we have 975 students enrolled from Grade RR-12 and 250 student alumni whom we support for five years post-Grade 12, until the age of 23. Student Statistics as of January 2026: • 462 students are Black African (47%) • 506 students are Coloured (52%) • 5 students are of foreign descent (1%) • 2 students are white (0,2%) • 417 are boys (43%), while 558 (57%) are girls Christel House South Africa is a trauma-informed school, meaning that through practice and approach, curriculum delivery and social services support are grounded in understanding trauma and its consequences to promote healing and resilience within the students and families we serve. Teachers and staff have received specialised training to recognise the signs and symptoms of trauma in young people. This training allows teachers and staff to adjust the classroom environment or the pace at which learning happens to best enable students to deal with their trauma, whilst providing the delivery of quality education. This could have been caused by family discord, a severe family tragedy, or unrest within their home communities. The student’s mental and physical health and safety are always our number one priority. Making allowances for these sorts of disruptions makes a world of difference in lessening the stresses on students and maximising their learning potential. We contribute to the foundation of each student’s life and the fibre of their communities. This is in keeping with 8 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our College and Careers Department supports our alumni for five years post-matric; over 95% of our current alumni cohort are studying or working. The model is built on helping our communities through poverty-mitigating enablers, character-based development and career-focused education to create long-term holistic sustainability in our communities. The Christel House model Our holistic education model is designed to transform the lives of impoverished children. In addition to providing top-quality CAPS-aligned education, critical aspects of our model include poverty mitigation services in the form of daily transport to school and back, professional health care, nutritious meals, psychosocial counselling, family assistance and college and career planning and support. At Christel House all children, affected by severe poverty, don’t only have the chance to benefit from quality education, but are encouraged to dream about the kind of future they want to be part of. With our support they can pursue their full academic and life potential without poverty getting in the way of their dreams. 2025 Systemic Results Summary (source: WCED) In Grade 6, Christel House achieved a 98.3% pass rate in Mathematics compared to the provincial average of 41.6%, and an 87.9% pass rate in English against a provincial 44.5%, reflecting performance more than double the provincial benchmark In Grade 9, despite increased curriculum complexity, Christel House learners continued to outperform the province, achieving 49.2% in Mathematics versus 24.9% provincially, and 84.7% in English compared to the provincial 43.6%, maintaining a strong lead in high school. Across all grades, Christel House results consistently exceed not only provincial averages but also quintile benchmarks, highlighting the effectiveness of our long-term, structured, and well-resourced education model in under-resourced communities in Cape Town. Matric Success Our Class of 2025 achieved a 96% matric pass rate, with 70% earning Bachelor passes, outperforming provincial averages and opening doors to further study, employment, entrepreneurship opportunities and ultimately, upward economic mobility for children who start life at a disadvantage In their final year Christel House South Africa provides additional support initiatives such as the Matric Intensive Programme, where our multipurpose hall is transformed into a dorm and study hub during exams. This safe, distraction-free space allows students to remain on campus over the exams and benefit from nutritious meals and after-hours mentorship from teachers. In 2025, this focused support resulted in 26 subject distinctions across a cohort of 56 matric students. Expanding our Mission and our Impact Our strategy for 2025/26 has been to replicate our model and expand Christel House South Africa to include an additional high school on our existing property. In January 2026 we welcomed our second cohort of 60 Grade 8 learners as part of the 2026 high school intake, and over the following five years we will add a new grade annually until a capacity of 300 students is reached by 2029. We provide all of the same “warp-around” services as we do at present, which sees our healthcare, social services, college and career and nutritional programmes expand to support our extended learner footprint. Our new High School extension consists of 11 classrooms including a Technology Lab, College and Careers Hub, a Media Library and Speciality Rooms. In this way we look forward to broadening our impact and assisting more at-risk children access quality education and escape the multi-dimensional poverty that impacts so many youth living in under-served communities. Our goal is for them to achieve upward economic mobility for themselves, their families, and indirectly, their communities. Effecting a Solution – why Christel House? Schools are critically needed to accommodate the rising number of illiterate, under-served youth. We directly solve these problems. We have an outstanding track record: A 99% matric pass rate. 70% of learners eligible for higher education studies. 95% of post schoolers studying or in employment. 84% report having escaped multidimensional poverty – a key ingredient of upward economic and social mobility. With another high school on our premises, we can increase our high school capacity by 100% serving another 300 learners and their parents positively impacting communities. By 2027 we want to be ready to open another RR-12 school in the Western Cape. What we do works. Our learners are with us from age 4 to 18 - and 5 more years post school. 100% of Your Gift—100% of the Impact Thanks to the steadfast support of Christel House International, our global parent organisation based in the United States, you can be assured that 100% of your contribution will go directly to the project it is intended to support and will directly benefit our students. • All administrative, management, and fundraising costs are covered in perpetuity by Christel House International (based in Indianapolis, US) via the Endless Success Foundation that was established by our founder, the late Christel DeHaan. • Christel House South Africa is the only Christel House school on the continent, and in South Africa.
